Last Updated on January 16, 2026

One of Berlin’s best museums, Pergamon Museum, closed down in 2023, undergoing extensive renovations which will keep it closed until 2037.

This week, they have announced a partial reopening in 2027 with two important works restored. While the full museum won’t be accessible for another decade, visitors will once again be able to marvel at its star attraction: the Pergamon Altar.

Peragmon Altar Hall Reopening in 2027

Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, and Andreas Scholl, Director of the Collection of Antiquities, shared the exciting news that the altar will reopen in spring or summer 2027.

Restoration work in the altar hall is nearing completion, including a thorough cleaning of the renowned friezes and the removal of paint from the reconstructed architectural elements.

A significant upgrade is the introduction of artificial lighting to complement the natural daylight, ensuring the altar is illuminated brightly and evenly, showcasing the intricate details of the friezes. Air conditioning will also be installed in all rooms.

To accommodate visitors while other sections remain under construction, a new entrance is being created from the Spree side, guiding them past the Old National Gallery and under the altar into the central wing.

From the altar hall, visitors will proceed to the Hellenistic Hall, featuring columns and capitals representing various Greek styles, and a Greek square highlighted by the statue of Athena. The entire north wing, which will house the relocated and expanded Museum of Islamic Art, will also open in 2027, doubling its current exhibition space.

The New Mshatta Façade

A highlight of the Museum of Islamic Art’s new display will be the Mshatta façade, a masterpiece of 8th-century early Islamic stonemasonry from a caliph’s palace in present-day Jordan.

Following meticulous cleaning of its 450 blocks, the façade is being reconstructed in a larger room in the north wing. While the hope of a seamless, jointless reconstruction proved impossible due to wartime damage, the expanded space will allow the façade to be extended by twelve meters.

The Pergamon Museum’s unique strength lies in its chronological architectural history tour, taking visitors through various eras, from Egyptian and Near Eastern cultures, the Processional Way of Babylon, the Market Gate of Miletus, and finally, the Pergamon Altar – now presented in the correct historical sequence.

Pergamon Museum Reopening | Final Thoughts

The Pergamon Museum has been completely closed since autumn 2023 for extensive renovation. It is one of the most important museums in the world and attracts millions of visitors every year. The extensive renovation and expansion is part of the Museum Island master plan. The museum is scheduled to be fully open again in 2037.
