Where To Stay in Berlin? Understanding Berlin’s Neighborhoods

Choosing the right neighborhood is crucial to your Berlin experience. Here’s a quick overview:

Mitte – The historic center, home to Museum Island, Unter den Linden, and major sights. Central but can feel touristy.

Prenzlauer Berg – Charming, family-friendly with beautiful streets, cafés, and the Sunday flea market at Mauerpark.

Friedrichshain – Young, alternative, and edgy with great nightlife. Home to the East Side Gallery.

Kreuzberg – Multicultural, artistic, and lively. Known for Turkish markets, street art, and vibrant dining.

Charlottenburg – West Berlin elegance with shopping on Ku’damm, museums, and a more refined atmosphere.

Schöneberg – Residential and LGBTQ+-friendly, close to everything but quieter than Mitte.

Best Luxury Hotels in Berlin (5*)

Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin

Berlin’s most iconic hotel sits directly beside the Brandenburg Gate. This legendary property has hosted everyone from royalty to rock stars since 1907 (rebuilt in 1997 after war destruction). Expect opulent rooms, a world-class spa, Michelin-starred dining, and service that defines German hospitality at its finest. The location is unbeatable for sightseeing, but obviously views like this don’t come cheap.

Some rooms overlook the Brandenburg Gate directly, which makes ordering room service a must. But you can also make use of the restaurants, like the
Brasserie Quarré, Bel Etage, or the members-only China Club.

Fact: This is where Michael Jackson famously dangled baby Blanket out the window in 2002.

Waldorf Astoria Luxury Hotel in Berlin

photo via Instagram

Waldorf Astoria Berlin

Since 2013, the Waldorf Astoria Berlin has offered elegance and luxury from its location near Kurfürstendamm. The hotel literally towers over the nearby S-Bahn Zoo, an area that used to be considered one of the worst in the city. Not anyore though! These days it’s next to luxury shopping and lots of galleries. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the rooms and suites offer views of the skyline, including the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.

The interiors reflect the Art Deco glamour of the original New York Waldorf hotel, featuring rich woods, marble accents, and carefully curated contemporary art. Guests can also unwind at the Guerlain spa with its indoor pool glowing beneath a starlit ceiling, or sip cocktails at the Serenity Bar on the roof (summer only). On the weekend, you can head to Roca restaurant for their signature “Champagne & Eggs” brunch.

Tip: This is where all the biggest names in music, film, and even politics tend to stay.

Ritz Carlton Luxury Hotel in Berlin

Ritz-Carlton Berlin

The elegant Ritz-Carlton Berlin stands tall over Potsdamer Platz, a Berlin neighborhood that rose phoenix-like from the ruins of the Cold War’s no-man’s-land. The location is unbeatable: just steps from the glittering Sony Center, the Philharmonie concert hall, and pretty Tiergarten park.

Since opening in 2004, this luxurious haven has become synonymous with impeccable service and refined comfort. The rooms are wrapped in a sophisticated palette of warm earth tones, bespoke furnishings, and marble bathrooms that feel like private sanctuaries. During the summer months, you’ll definitely want to pop up to the Secret Champagne Garden on the roof.

Hotel de Rome Berlin Luxury Hotel

Hotel de Rome

This Rocco Forte property is situated in a 19th-century bank building on historic Bebelplatz. The original vault of the bank now serves as the stunning pool and spa area. Rooms offer classic elegance with modern amenities and top-tier service. The hotel’s location is excellent, placing you within walking distance of Museum Island, Gendarmenmarkt, and Unter den Linden.

The Hotel de Rome is also home to a restaurant on the rooftop deck, which boasts spectacular views of Bebelplatz and beyond. They also frequently host movie photo calls, which makes it a great choice if you’re after a celebrity sighting or two.

Das Stue Luxury Hotel in Berlin

Das Stue

Housed in the former Danish Embassy overlooking Berlin’s Tiergarten park, Das Stue brings understated luxury to the city. The hotel is practically nestled into the park itself, which makes it a great choice for those seeking out quiet in the city.

Inside, Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola has created interiors that blend mid-century modern aesthetics with contemporary comfort. The hotel’s Cinco restaurant serves exceptional Spanish-inspired cuisine, and the location offers tranquility while remaining central.

Orania Berlin Luxury Hotel in Kreuzberg

photo via Instagram

Orania.Berlin

Kreuzberg might be a busy and hip area, but it just doesn’t have that many hotels, let alone luxury ones. In fact, Orania is the only 5-star choice in this hood. The Orania occupies a gorgeous heritage building on Oranienstrasse, and somehow manages to capture Berlin’s creative spirit mixed with a luxury vibe. This former headquarters of a women’s rights organization features art-filled interiors, a jazz club in the basement, and a restaurant celebrating local ingredients. It’s luxury with an edge, perfect for those who want style and quick access to one of the coolest hoods in the city.

Tip: If you’re a jazz lover, it’s worth popping into the jazz nights, even if you’re not actually staying in the hotel. And if you’re hungry, head to the restaurant to check out their famous X-Berg Duck, a creative interpretation of Peking duck.

Roomers Berlin Steinplatz Berlin Hotels

photo via Instagram

Roomers Steinplatz Berlin

The Roomers Steinplatz is a design-forward boutique hotel occupying a meticulously restored 1920s building near the leafy Steinplatz. This 92-room gem exudes an almost decadent glamour. Think: moody lighting, sumptuous velvet upholstery, and dramatic dark woods that channel the louche spirit of Weimar-era Berlin. The indulgence continues into the bathrooms, with Acqua di Parma amenities and luxurious rainfall showers.

The hotel’s crown jewel is its stunning rooftop terrace and bar, where guests sip inventive cocktails beneath the stars with views across the elegant residential neighborhood below. Downstairs, the Library restaurant serves creative cuisine in an intimate, club-like atmosphere that feels like a secret society for discerning hedonists.

Upper Mid-Range Berlin Hotels

Soho House Berlin Hotel

Soho House Berlin

Soho House Berlin was the first Soho House to open in Europe. It’s been offering its signature blend of artistic ambiance and relaxed British luxury since 2010. The decor reads typicaly Soho plush elegance, with velvet sofas, green tiles, and plenty of dark and cozy corners (perfect for the celebrity clientele to hide in). During the summer, the fun moves to the rooftop pool, with views toward the TV Tower.

Like all Soho House properties, public areas are members-only, but hotel guests have full access. And yes, it’s a celebrity hotspot, but of course, no photos are allowed.

25 Hours Bikini Hotel in Berlin Charlottenburg

photo via Instagram

25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin

Leave the formal hotel format behind and head to 25hours for something different. This charming and quirky hotel overlooks the Berlin Zoo and stands atop the Bikini Berlin mall below. It has a jungle-inspired design theme throughout—a playful nod to the animal neighbors next door. Many rooms have a view of the Zoo itself, so you can watch the monkeys right from your very own bathroom.

When dusk falls, head to the rooftop Monkey Bar for delicious cocktails and oh-so-Berlin afterwork vibes, complete with DJs. There’s plenty of indoor space, so this rooftop bar is open year-round. It gets so busy here, there’s often a queue to get upstairs!

Most Unusual Berlin Hotels | Michelberger

Michelberger Hotel

The Michelberger remains one of the top hotel choices in Berlin. It’s the one I recommend the most to out-of-town visitors, based on both its location and Berlin vibes. Rooms range from compact to sprawling lofts, all with distinctive design touches.

It’s not luxury, but the cool factor is off the charts here. It’s the place to stay for many a touring musician or DJ. Fittingly, the lobby bar is bustling in the evenings, and the hotel frequently hosts performances and DJ sets.

The Michelberger Restaurant is an excellent choice for modern German food (Anthony Bourdain dined here!), as well as a great breakfast.

Most Unusual Berlin Hotels | Hotel Oderberger

Hotel Oderberger

A former public swimming hall transformed into a stunning hotel? Only in Berlin! At first glance, a former public pool might not sound like a great place to book your weekend stay. But take a peek inside the Hotel Oderberger, and you will likely change your mind.

The hotel’s 70 rooms have been thoughtfully designed with a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic that accentuates the building’s history: exposed brick, wooden beams, and large windows that flood the spaces with natural light. The Prenzlauer Berg location adds a neighborly feel.

Not surprisingly, the real star here is the original pool, with its soaring ceilings, ornate balconies, and Art Nouveau tilework. It now serves as the hotel’s breathtaking centerpiece, where guests can swim laps in the same waters where Berliners splashed more than a century ago.

Tip: The stunning pool is open to both guests and the public, so even if you don’t stay here, you can come by for a swim.

Schlosshotel Berlin Hotel Grunewald

photo via Instagram

Schlosshotel

If you’re looking for something different, why not stay in a castle? The Schlosshotel in leafy green Grunewald is not just a hotel styled to look like a castle. It’s the real thing! Originally built as a private residence for lawyer and politician Walter von Pannwitz, it was later transformed by fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld into a supremely stylish retreat that marries Prussian grandeur with modern luxury.

The rooms and suites here ooze refined opulence, featuring antique furnishings, rich fabrics, and marble bathrooms, while showcasing the building’s original sweeping staircases, intricate moldings, parquet floors.

The location, surrounded by the Grunewald forest and just minutes from the serene Wannsee lakes, offers the kind of peace and quiet that’s simply not available in the city. But even with the somewhat remote location, you’ll not be left wanting here, with the onsite spa and intimate Vivaldi restaurant.

Locke Hotel Friedrichshain Berlin Hotels

photo via Instagram

Locke Hotel at East Side Gallery

Berlin is famous for its industrial-style clubs, but until now, there hasn’t been a hotel to match. Enter: the Locke at East Side Gallery, which offers brutalist concrete design mixed with luxury modern style.

Parked on the bank of the Spree, right next to East Side Gallery, this hotel offers an apartment-like experience, complete with fully-functional kitchens, washer-dryers, and plenty of space to actually live rather than just sleep. The aesthetic is effortlessly cool without trying too hard: Scandi-minimalist interiors with warm wooden accents, floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the spaces with light, and touches of local art that ground you firmly in Berlin’s creative spirit.

The location here is stellar if you’re interested in the east side’s vibrant nightlife, plus you have two amazing restaurants, Mina and Anima, right downstairs.

Most Unusual Berlin Hotels | Wilmina

Wilmina Hotel

Berlin’s unique history means there are plenty of beautifully restored and repurposed buildings. Even so, the Wilmina Hotel stands out. This charming hotel in Charlottenburg offers something that no one else has: the chance to stay in a refurbished women’s prison.

You will definitely not feel like a prisoner while staying here. The space has been lovingly transformed by British architect John Pawson, who’s also responsible for the stunning Feuerle Collection transformation in Kreuzberg. The hotel retains many original features like vaulted brick ceilings, iron staircases, and even a few former cell doors, all centered around a leafy green courtyard.

The Wilmina is also more than just a hotel. The restaurant offers both the contemporary German restaruant Lovis, as well as a bakery that turns out some of the best bread in the city. The attached Amtsalon (a former courthouse) now hosts cultural events and exhibitions. If you’re lucky enough, you can peek inside for a glimpse of the beautiful Bocci light installation.

Nhow Hotel Best Berlin Hotels Friedrichshain

nhow Berlin

If you’re searching for something out of the ordinary, the nhow is a great option. This music-themed hotel is cantilevered over the sidewalk by the Spree. This east-side location is perfect if you’ve got clubbing on your mind.

The hotel was designed by Canadian industrial designer Karim Rashid. It’s curvy, bright, and mostly pink. It’s unusual and definitely not for everyone! One of the elevators bears the designer’s own image (along with his ex-wife) on the ceiling, and it makes me laugh every time I see it.

The music theme extends to an on-site recording studio as well as instruments you can borrow. This overall vibe is fun and irreverent. I’ve had several friends happily stay here, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to my parents.

Linnen Hotel Best Berlin Hotels Prenzlauer Berg

photo via Instagram

Linnen

Say no to the typical chain hotel and book your stay at the charming Linnen hotel in Prenzlauer Berg. Of all the hotels on this list, this is the one that offers the closest feeling to staying in an actual Berlin apartment (minus the usual Airbnb drama).

The Linnen is simply not your typical hotel. This becomes clear as you check in at the ground-floor cafe (no reception). It becomes even more clear as you ascend the stairs to one of the five charming guest rooms. Each one has been decorated with its distinct character, a mix of Scandi and vintage, with each furnishing lovingly handpicked by the owner. Even though it’s not a big chain, comfort is a priority here. In fact, the bedding was such a hit that you can now purchase some of your own to take home.

It’s cozy and definitely not cookie-cutter! The location, near the popular Mauerpark, is also fantastic and offers a neighborhood vibe that many other Berlin hotels just can’t compete with. However, if you desire room service and a spa, this is definitely not the location for you.

Hotel Amano Best Berlin Hotels Guide

Hotel Amano (Multiple Locations)

The Hotel Amano offers several properties across Berlin, in Mitte, Friedrichshain, and Grand Central (Hauptbahnhof). The Amano always delivers consistent quality, good design, and fair prices.

Even though it’s a chain, each hotel maintains its own unique flavor. The original Amano Hotel near Rosenthaler Platz features minimalist Scandinavian-inspired interiors, while the Amano Grand Central offers over 700 rooms and multiple dining options. The location means it’s a great choice if you have an early or late train.

Rooms are compact but well-designed, and the rooftop bars are neighborhood favorites. The Grand Central location near Berlin Hauptbahnhof offers the best value.

Tip: The Hotel Amano at Rosenthaler Platz offers a popular rooftop bar which you can visit even if you’re not staying at the hotel.

Grimms Hotel Best Berlin Hotels Guide

Grimm’s Hotel (Multiple Locations)

When you think chain hotel, you usually think boring rooms and somewhat impersonal service. Fortunately, that’s not the case at Grimm’s! This small hotel chain is both family-run and extremely charming. The hotel’s design draws inspiration from the Brothers Grimm, featuring playful design elements and thematic touches that reference classic German folklore. It’s a great blend of professional service mixed with the charm of a small hotel.

The location on Alte Jakobstr near the Kreuzberg border occupies a restored 19th-century building, while the Grimm’s Hotel am Potsdamer Platz is an excellent jumping-off point if you’re attending the Berlinale. As a bonus, the breakfast buffet is delicious and generous.

Budget Hotels & Best Hostels in Berlin

Generator Best Hostels in Berlin Guide

Generator Berlin (Multiple Locations)

Not to be outdone by the vibrant Berlin hotel scene, the Generator Hostel company operates three hostels in Berlin that offer budget-friendly options with a ton of style. (Both private rooms and dorms are available.) The Mitte location in a former government building is particularly atmospheric, while the Prenzlauer Berg property offers a more subdued neighborhood character.

The Generator offers a much cooler vibe than many hostels, complete with social spaces, bars, and regular events make it easy to meet fellow travelers. (I once attended a Boiler Room session at the Mitte location.)

Motel One Berlin Photo Spots

Motel One (Multiple Locations)

German efficiency meets budget hospitality here! Motel One is a ubiquitous hotel chain in Berlin, offering clean, modern rooms with good beds at a fair price. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

The design is surprisingly stylish for the price point, and the Tiergarten location even offers a rooftop bar.

With locations at Alexanderplatz, Tiergarten, and Bellevue, this one is always a solid choice.

Circus Hostel Best Hostels in Berlin

The Circus Hostel

One of Berlin’s original boutique hostels remains a favorite for its central location near Rosenthaler Platz, friendly atmosphere, and mix of dorms and private rooms. Downstairs, the original St Oberholz cafe offers excellent breakfast and speedy wifi. (It’s one of the most popular cafes to work at in the city and even has a coworking space upstairs.) The location is right in the center of MItte, which allows for easy access to great restaurants, bars, shopping & more.

Tip: Don’t miss the David Hasselhoff Museum in the basement!

Berlin Hotel Booking Tips

Timing: Berlin hotel prices fluctuate significantly based on events. Trade fairs, festivals like Berlinale, and major holidays see prices spike. Book early for these periods or consider staying slightly outside the center.

Transport: Berlin’s excellent public transport (the BVG) means you don’t need to stay in Mitte. Consider neighborhoods like Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, or Neukölln for better value and more authentic experiences.

Length of Stay: Many hotels offer discounts for longer stays. Week-long bookings often come with reduced rates.

Direct Booking: Smaller boutique hotels often offer better rates or perks when booking directly rather than through third-party sites.

Seasonal Considerations

Summer (June-August): Peak season goes hand-in-hand with the highest prices. Rooftop bars and outdoor spaces become major assets. Book well in advance.

Winter (November-February): Lower rates and fewer tourists, though Christmas markets (late November-December) see a brief spike. Cozy hotels with good spas are particularly appealing.

Spring/Fall: Ideal visiting times with moderate weather, reasonable prices, and good availability. September and May are particularly lovely.
