Berlin Wins “City of the Year” Award

The food scene in Berlin has change a lot since I moved here ten years ago, for the better. (Back then, I couldn’t even buy oat milk at Lidl.)

And here’s the evidence: Berlin was just named “City of the Year” in the annual Food and Travel Awards, recognizing its exceptional culinary diversity and overall cultural richness. The prestigious award, bestowed by Food and Travel Magazine, cements Berlin’s growing reputation as a global food destination.

Competing against other culinary hotspots like Bordeaux, Cape Town, Dubrovnik, Girona, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo, and Zurich, Berlin emerged as the standout choice. Burkard Kieker, spokesperson for visitBerlin, was delighted: “Being named ‘City of the Year’ by the globally renowned food and travel publication is a tremendous honor. We are thrilled that the magazine’s readers appreciate Berlin’s dynamic and innovative culinary scene. This award confirms that culinary experiences are now a major draw for visitors to our city.”

The Food & Travel Awards

For over two decades, Food and Travel has been a leading authority in the world of food and travel. The bimonthly magazine, edited by Gregor Rankin, offers readers a diverse range of culinary adventures. Each year, readers vote to select the best restaurants, chefs, hotels, travel destinations, and more across 23 categories.

In addition to the “City of the Year” award, Food and Travel Magazine also named South Africa as the “Long-Haul Destination of the Year” and Spain as the “Short-Haul Destination of the Year.”

Berlin’s International Reputation Grows

Berlin’s international reputation continues to soar. Recently, Time Out ranked Berlin alongside New York and Cape Town as one of the top three travel destinations worldwide. Earlier this year, Oranienstraße in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district was named one of “the world’s 30 coolest streets” by Time Out, sharing the honor with Bree Street in Cape Town. Finally, the Happy City Index has recognized Berlin as one of the three happiest cities in the world.
