Berlin Beer Guide: What To Order

While Pilsner remains the ubiquitous everyday choice across the city, Berlin has also seen a vibrant explosion in its craft beer scene, offering a diverse array of modern styles from hoppy IPAs to rich stouts, often found in the city’s numerous independent breweries and lively taprooms.

When it comes to beer, Berlin is most famously known for its unique and refreshing Berliner Weisse. This traditional sour wheat beer, often called “the Champagne of the North,” is characterized by its tart, effervescent profile and is typically served with a shot of raspberry (himbeer) or woodruff (waldmeister) syrup to balance its acidity.

Beyond the iconic Berliner Weisse, Berliners also enjoy a vast selection of crisp Pilsners and increasingly, smooth Helles lagers. The city’s dynamic beer landscape truly offers something for every palate, blending centuries-old traditions with a contemporary craft brewing movement. Whether you’re sipping a tart Weisse in a historic pub or exploring a new IPA at a bustling craft beer bar, Berlin’s beer scene is as diverse and exciting as the city itself.

Bavarian-Style Beer Halls in Berlin

If Berlin is your only stop in Berlin, then you probably want to check out something that Germany is known for: the classic Bavarian-style Beer Hall. While they’re not native to Berlin, Berlin still boasts a long-standing tradition of beer halls.

Augustiner Gendarnmenmarkt Berlin

photo via Instagram

Augustiner am Gendarmenmarkt

If I’m taking out-of-towners through Gendarmenmarkt, this is almost always our next stop. Yes, it definitely caters to the tourist crowd but not exclusively. You’ll also find many Berliners on a business lunch here as well as locals who are after an Augustiner Edelstoff that flows directly from wooden casks. Popping in during the day is usually not a problem but if you want to come in the evening, be sure to book ahead.

There’s also a second location in Prenzlauer Berg, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about it.

Hofbräu Wirtshaus

photo via Instagram

Hofbräu Wirtshaus

For an even larger beer hall experience in Mitte, head to Hofbräu Wirsthaus, near Alexanderplatz. Yes, it’s touristy. (I’ve seen people with suitcases waiting for a table!) It’s also big and loud, especially during the evening when they also have live music. (I recommend booking ahead!) But the beer is cold and the service is efficient, even at peak business. If you’re after that Munich-style beer hall experience, it’s a great choice! It’s also much more chill during the day or their family-friendly Sunday brunch.

Maximillans Berlin

photo via Instagram

Maximilians

Maximilians serves Hacker Pschorr beers, including the notably delicious Edelhell poured from traditional wooden casks. While perhaps not exuding the quintessential traditional beer hall atmosphere, it’s a spot well worth checking out.

Lindenbrau Berlin

photo via Instagram

Lindenbräu am Potsdamer Platz

If you’re near Potsdamer Platz and you’re after a traditional German beer, Lindenbräu is your best bet. They serve up traditional German food (and Austrian schnitzel) alongside large pours of beer. Decorwise, it’s a bit more modern than the others on this list, but still retains that bustling, loud beer hall atmosphere.

Berlin Beer Gardens

Germany is well-known for its beer gardens. So during the warmer months, it makes sense to quench your thirst in one of them.

Prater Biergarten Berlin

photo via Instagram

Prater

Prater is Berlin’s oldest beer garden (since 1837!) and still one of the best in town. (It’s a personal favorite to take visitors!) With seating for 600 and an array of snacks to accompany your beer, this is the perfect place for your next sundowner. (Be warned: it does get busy!) Prater has been partially under construction for the past few years, but now it’s back to its former glory.

There’s also a more upscale restaurant on the property if you’re after a proper meal.

Zenner Biergarten Berlin

photo via Instagram

Zenner

If you’re taking a stroll through Treptower Park or visiting the nearby Soviet Memorial, Zenner is a great place to stop in for a bite and some beer. The biergarten sits in front of a stately building and offers up typical beer garden food alongside a separate pizza stand. There’s also a wine bar if you need a change of pace. This one is child-friendly and often has DJs or music during the warm summer evenings.

Birgit

Birgit brings a younger, fresher twist on the classic beer garden. As part of the nightclub Birgit, it’s located near the canal next to a number of night life venues. During the day, it’s got a casual family-friendly vibe. You can also get freshly tapped beer as well as food like pizza and würst.

Cafe am Neun See Berlin

Café Am Neuen See

Café Am Neuen See hits all the right notes during the summer season. Not only do they have all the traditional beer garden favorites, but they also offer pizza and a more formal indoor restaurant if that’s what you’re after. Take a seat under the tall trees and relax with a tall pint. When you’re replenished, consider renting a boat to paddle on the pond. (It’s one of our favorite places to take photographs!) I take out-of-town guests here frequently!

Berlin Breweries & Taprooms

Berliner Berg

photo via Instagram

Berliner Berg Brauerei

There’s nothing quite like fresh beer straight from the barrel! At Berliner Berg Brewery, you can savor a cold one in their relaxed beer garden or head indoors if the weather isn’t cooperating. This brewery truly stands out with its packed events calendar, ensuring there’s always something happening. You’ll find everything from a street food market to pub quizzes and public viewing events.

Brauerei Marcus Brau Berlin

photo via Instagram

Berliner Marcus Bräu

Not far from bustling Alexanderplatz, you’ll find the small Marcus Bräu brewery, serving up their beer in impressive tall glass mugs, including hoose a one-meter-tall giant! (Great for the ‘Gram!) Whether you prefer light or dark, the hallmark of Marcus Bräu is the full-bodied taste of their home-brewed, all-natural beer. This traditional pub also offers hearty Berlin specialties, prepared with old-world charm.

Berliner Republik

photo via Instagram

Berliner Republik

If you’re just as hungry as you are thirsty, Berliner Republik is a great option. This one has a great location near the Spree by busy Friedrichstraße. It also gets bonus points for serving food later than most. However, the real star of the show is their Broker’s Bier Börse, which starts at 5pm. That’s when the prices for 18 German beers on tap begin “trading” with variable pricing, like a stock market. Buy low!

Biermeisterei by Lemke Berlin

Biermeisterei by Lemke

Located just opposite Alexanderplatz, you’ll discover the passionate brewing specialists at Brauhaus Lemke. They craft their own beer right on-site, offering an impressive selection of 22 handcrafted beers. (You can even take a guided tour of the brewery.) From hop-forward IPAs and classic Pilsners and Weizens, to true Berliner Weiße and robust stouts and wood-barrel-aged noble beers – there’s a brew for every palate. To go with it, they offer BBQ including their famous ribs, direct from the smoker. During the summer months, you can take a seat in their beer garden.

This impressive selection, featuring both Heidenpeter’s brews and guest beers from 16 taps, can be sampled at his inviting bar tucked away in the corner of the busy market.

How does Bavarian tapas sound? If you want to try a few dishes or share, head to Leibhaftig in Pankow. The beer here is technically not brewed on site but rather shipped directly from Spreewald. They offer fruity wheat beers (Weizen), strong Doppelkorn or full-bodied bitter Pilsners all served up in the small (30-seat) space. You can also sign up for a tasting.

Schalander Privatbrauerei Berlin

At Schalander Brewery in Friedrichshain, you’ll consistently find their light Pilsner, dark beer, and wheat beer on tap, complemented by seasonal specialty brews. The brewmaster here focuses on handcrafted beer produced in a 150-liter brewing system centrally located in the dining room. All their beers are fresh, unfiltered, and natural.

Beyond the brews, Schalander offers a surprisingly well-stocked selection of German wines and food like schnitzel, tarte flambée, or their famous dark beer beef goulash with spaetzle. While the surrounding RAW Gelände can be loud and gritty, their leafy beer garden is downright idyllic.

Biererei Bar Berlin

photo via Instagram

Biererei Bar & Vintage Cellar

Biererei is one of my favorites in the city and part of that is because I personally watched their success story unfold. The son of one of the spätis on Oranienstr started branching out from the usual selections and stocking craft beer. It didn’t take long to see that the beer was a winning strategy! They now have a beer-focused shop as well as their craft beer bar, all run by owner Chihan, a man who seriously knows his beer. (His mother seems to be happily retired from späti life!)

The bar boasts a modern glass-fronted beer room with 20 taps. You can even take some home in a growler if you wish. (It’s also fun to go pick out a few flavors at their späti/store across the street to drink at one of the small tables out front.)

Bier Laden Berlin

Bier Laden Berlin

Bier Laden is a tiny beer shop with only about 20 seats. It mostly functions as a storefront, where you can choose from over 200 types of bottled beer to go. However, they also offer about 6 taps with indoor seating and a few patio seats, if you can snag them. Stop here for a pint, then grab a few bottles to drink in nearby Templehof.

BRLO Gastropub Berlin

photo via Instagram

BRLO Gastropub Charlottenburg

BRLO brings their famed beer to Charlottenburg. Once a traditional Irish pub, it has now been thoroughly redesigned by Studio Karhard (the team famous for designing Berghain). The resulting space is a great combination of that British pub feel with a modern Berlin twist. Twenty taps, a sprawling outside space and a “späti” with drinks to go complete the makeover. Pop by for a pub quiz, Drag Queen brunch (with bottomless mimosas!), or their popular Sunday Roast.

The Castle Mitte Berlin

photo via Instagram

The Castle

The Castle stands out with its spacious industrial-style interior, featuring an eye-catching bar, and ample seating both inside and in the beer garden.

On a cold December evening, my twin brother and I enjoyed perfectly served pale ales from Stone Brewing Co., soaking in the lively atmosphere of this popular spot. My golden, hoppy pale ale with hints of toffee was truly delicious. This brilliant craft beer bar in Mitte, with its lived-in charm and interesting craft beer features, relocated a few years ago but remains as excellent as ever, offering a superb and well-priced selection of beers. Located in an area with many other great beer spots, The Castle is definitely worth a visit.

Foeresters Berlin

Foersters Feine Biere

While a little outside the city’s hustle and bustle, this family-run bar richly rewards those who venture out with an exceptional array of German beers. Their focus is squarely on traditional styles from independent breweries, particularly those hailing from the south of Germany. Try a perfectly poured Schönramer Hell or one of their ever-changing draught specials. To complement the fantastic beer, indulge in some classic German fare, like the hearty Knacker mit Kartoffelsalat (sausage and potato salad) or the Leberwurst Brot (liver pâté on bread).

Hopfenreich Berlin

Hopfenreich

Hopfenreich is Kreuzberg’s first (and perhaps best?) craft beer bar, offering a selection of 20 international beers. It’s rare to get authentic Kreuzberg bar vibes with friendly and helpful staff. Don’t forget to say hi to the little hedgehog: Ferdinand, the bar’s mascot.

Hops And Barley Berlin

Hops & Barley

Located in a former historic butchery, Hops & Barley has been brewing beer since 2008. In addition to traditional varieties like Pilsner, Amber, Dark, and Wheat, they also craft special beers such as IPAs, Pale Ales, Bock beers, and Stouts with various hop profiles. If you’re looking for locally made, super fresh, traditional German beer, Hops & Barley is the place to go.

Kaschk was an independent small craft beer bar that got hit hard during COVID. However, the BRLO team came to the rescue and kept it going, almost the same as it always did. But they also stand out for their shuffleboards, located downstairs. (It’s the only bar in Berlin I can think of with this feature!)

If you’re after an assortment of craft beers in Prenzlauer Berg, Bierlinie is your best bet. While they stock beer from all over the world, their selection of Belgian beers is the standout. They also regularly host tasting events, if you want to learn more about beer in general.

Brauerei Flessa

Brauerei Flessa is its own brewery. However, it doesn’t have an onsite taproom. However. they do offer a storefront, where you can grab a few of their delicious beers to-go.

Honorable Mention: Any Späti

Not every späti will have an impressive array of craft beer. However, grabbing a wegbier (translation: way beer meaning a beer for the road) is a German tradition. Lots of spätis stock local beer and will carry many German favorites. (Look for a beer from Bavaria, which still follows the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516!) Then take a seat at the table outside (most shops will have them) or sit yourself down in one of Berlin’s many parks. Pröst!
