5 Best Boutique Hotels In Berlin

Last Updated on December 28, 2024

Searching for the best boutique hotels in Berlin?

Not surprisingly, Berlin’s hotel scene is as eclectic as the city itself, with intimate boutique properties tucked away in everything from restored Art Nouveau mansions to converted factories. Unlike the giant chain hotels that dot the city’s main thoroughfares, these smaller gems offer something increasingly precious in our standardized world: personality.

In a city where creativity flows through every neighborhood, from the gallery-lined streets of Mitte to the bohemian corners of Kreuzberg, Berlin’s boutique hotels are masters of reinvention. Former post offices now house design-forward suites, and one-time department stores have been transformed into architectural marvels where every room tells a different story. These aren’t just places to rest your head – they’re portals into Berlin’s rich cultural tapestry.

What sets Berlin’s boutique hotel scene apart is its remarkable ability to honor the city’s complex history while embracing its role as Europe’s contemporary creative capital. Whether you’re seeking the opulent glamour of the Weimar Republic, the raw industrial edge of reunification-era Berlin, or the polished sophistication of the modern city, there’s a boutique hotel that captures that precise zeitgeist.

In this guide, we’ll take you through Berlin’s most remarkable intimate hotels, from hidden courtyard gems to rooftop hideaways. Each has been selected not just for its comfort and service, but for that indefinable quality that makes a hotel feel like a discovery rather than just a reservation. These are places that could only exist in Berlin, shaped by the city’s unique spirit and designed for travelers who want their accommodation to be as memorable as the destination itself.

1. Telegraphenamt

One of Berlin’s old post buildings has been transformed into the chic Telegraphenamt, with a stunning location next to Museum Island. If you want to be right in the middle of things, it doesn’t get better than this.

The Telegraphenamt opened in 2022, after 10 years of construction. And it looks like it was worth the wait! The 93 guest rooms are a suitable blend of luxe-industrial, boasting vaulted ceilings, exposed brick walls and pale parquet floors. Thoughtful design details like distressed tile and trough sinks nod to the building’s past.

Take a walk downstairs to find ROOT bar, a cafe/coworking space by day and buzzing bar at night. The hotel is all the creation of Borchardt’s Roland Mary, so you already know you’re in the best of hands. Over at ROOT restaurant, the food is to be missed, whether that’s sushi, Thai curries or seafood. Vegan and vegatarians are also well-catered to. Of course, breakfast is also served from the generous hours of 7am to 3pm, to accommodate those who indulged in some of Berlin’s infamous nightlife.

2. Hotel Château Royal

The Chateau Royal is another new addition to the Berlin hotel scene, having opened in as a sister establishment to the famed Grill Royal. Expect artsy sophistication in an unstuffy atmosphere. To kick things off you are greeted at the main entrance by a bronze sculpture by one of my favorite Berlin artists, Alicja Kwade.

Throughout the 93 guest rooms upstairs, the art theme continues. Each room features work from artists such as Damien Hirst and Anne Imhof, via a collaboration with KW Institute for Contemporary Art. But it’s not just the art that will catch your eye. Each room is unique too, taking inspiration from Berlin in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

That’s not to say food is on the back burner here. The charming Restaurant Chateau Royal offers mouthwatering modern Mediterranean cuisine. If you’re visiting during the warmer months, try for seating in the romantic courtyard. And don’t miss out on grabbing a nightcap next to the fireplace in the bar.

3. The Hoxton

The Berlin outpost of the British Hoxton chain offers a mixture of worlds. Located on Savignyplatz in Berlin’s West neighborhood of Charlottenburg, The Hoxton is located close to many of Berlin’s best restaurants and the shopping street Kurfürstendamm.

The hotel was designed with Art Nouveau Berlin in mind. Think: curved lines, scalloped headboards, patterned tile, and a light and airy color palette. The rooms are spacious (if you avoid the smallest size) and the hotel is both dog and kid-friendly.

Need a bite? Head to the House of Tandoor downstairs for some Northern Indian cuisine. Good Indian food can be hard to find in Berlin so this is a treat! The teahouse also serves breakfast and drinks, so it’s a great pit stop at any time of day.

4. Orania Berlin

Location, location, location. If you want to be situated in a hip bustling neighborhood (Kreuzberg), then the Orania.Berlin is for you. Housed in a historic 1913 building, the hotel has a sophisticated but not stuffy vibe.

All rooms boast all the normal amenities like flat-screen TVs, wifi, and coffee machines and most feature bathrooms with both a rain shower and a separate bathtub. The rooms have been designed with furniture by Antonio Citterio & Patricia Urquiola.

But don’t spend all your time in your room! The bar/restaurant downstairs (Living Room) frequently features live music from local musicians and jazz nights. Curl up in a cozy chair with a cocktail in hand and soak up the atmosphere. If you’re hungry, hit up the kitchen which serves anything from hot dogs to their famous four-course Kreuzberg Duck.

5. Provocateur

In the mood for a sexy weekend away? Then make burlesque-inspired Provocateur your top choice. This chic boutique invokes 1920s Paris: think jewel-tones, black walls, velvet, gold, and lots of glam.

The theme carries on into the rooms upstairs, all of which fit into a red or blue color-scheme. Flip a switch next to the bed to activate “Provocateur Mode”: automatically dimmed lights and risqué video artwork by Berlin photographer Kai Stuht.

Location-wise, we’re talking West Berlin: Provocateur is located the rather sleepy arena of Wilmersdorf. However, it’s just a short five-minute stroll to the luxe shopping area of Ku’damm. Just be sure to note that this definitely isn’t the right location for you if you want bustling cafes or nightlife right at your door.

That’s not necessarily a worry though because the hotel has more than enough to keep you occupied. Grab a cocktail in the bustling bar or hit up the Chinese-French fusion restaurant, Golden Phoenix, for dishes and dim sum from The Duc Ngo, one of Berlin’s top chefs.
