Best Open-Air Cinemas in Berlin
Last Updated on June 8, 2026
There’s a particular kind of magic to watching a film under the open sky on a warm Berlin evening. The rustling of trees, the first stars appearing overhead, the glow of the screen cutting through the dusk: it’s a peak summer experience. Fortunately for us, Berlin has long embraced the Freiluftkino tradition, and every summer the city comes alive with dozens of outdoor screenings, from arthouse favourites to cult classics to fresh Berlinale picks.
Here are our favorite spots to catch a film al fresco this season.
The Best Open-Air Cinemas for Summer 2026

1. Freiluftkino Kreuzberg
→ Courtyard Cinema with Soul
Tucked away in the courtyard of the Kunstquartier Bethanien, Freiluftkino Kreuzberg is one of Berlin’s most atmospheric open-air cinemas. Here, you can sit beneath the trees, right in the heart of the neighbourhood yet pleasantly shielded from the bustle of Mariannenplatz. Instead of fixed rows of seats, you rent deckchairs and set them up yourself in front of the screen. On cooler evenings, blankets are available to hire, and the kiosk offers beer, soft drinks, tea, coffee and snacks at fair prices. Dogs are welcome on a leash. The programme is genuinely impressive: arthouse and independent cinema sits alongside cult classics and strong mainstream titles: anything from the latest blockbusters to European auteur films. Book ahead, as screenings often sell out quickly in good weather. The 2026 season started on 8 May.

2. Freiluftkino Friedrichshain
→ The Classic in the Park
The Open-Air Cinema Friedrichshain sits in the middle of Volkspark Friedrichshain, on the border with Prenzlauer Berg — surrounded by old trees and meadows, this green space transforms into one of Berlin’s largest and most popular open-air cinemas every summer.
With 1,500 seats on comfortable benches with backrests, plus an additional 300 seats at tables and lush lawns where you can spread out with blankets and a picnic basket, there’s room for everyone. The programme covers real classics as well as recent blockbusters, making it a reliable choice for a crowd-pleasing evening out.

3. Freiluftkino Rehberge
→ Wedding’s Hidden Gem
During the warm months, a listed open-air stage in Wedding from the 1930s transforms into one of the city’s most atmospheric open-air cinemas. With approximately 1500 seats, Freiluftkino Rehberge is one of the highest-capacity open-air cinemas in the city. The programming offers a diverse mix of Hollywood and independent cinema on balmy summer nights. The surrounding park spans an impressive 115 hectares with meadows, forest areas and idyllic lakes. It’s a great idea to arrive early, and start your evening with a walk through the park or a dip at the nearby Plötzensee lido.

4. Freiluftkino Insel
→ Arthouse at the Atelier Gardens
If you venture down past the southern edge of Tempelhofer Feld, you will be rewarded with a cinematic treasure: the Freiluftkino Insel. As part of Atelier Gardens, the former BUFA site has been making cinema and television history for over 100 years. Sit back in a cozy deck chair and enjoy the programming. Independent cinema, arthouse highlights, documentaries, short films and festival specials are shown four days a week. This is a great choice for the true cinephile or for anyone who takes film seriously.

5. Kino Central
→ Backyard cinema in Mitte
Right on the edge of Hackescher Markt, lies a genuine Berlin courtyard cinema. During the summer season (from Sunday to Wednesday only) Kino Central screens modern classics and the latest arthouse films and all shown in English or with English subtitles. Amidst street art, local charm and a backyard atmosphere, a night at the cinema here feels almost like a short stroll through the city with a screening to round it off. Tip: arrive before dusk to grab a seat and afterward, get a drink in the neighboring Eschloraque or Cafe Cinema.

6. Freiluftkino Hasenheide
→ Green and cosy
Hasenheide holds a few different secrets but one of them is the open-air cinema. It’s a cozy little kino in a beautiful (and quiet!) setting. The program tends toward arthouse and cult films as well as selected mainstream movies. Something is shown every day throughout the summer, and since they added an improved screen and sound system, films are even shown during the day. This is a great pick for a date! Bring a bottle of wine and your cutie and escape the city life for a few hours.

→ Outdoor cinema with a punk rock flair
If you want a more East Berlin punk-style experience for your movie going pleasure, Neue Zukunft is a great choice. It’s tucked away behind some graffittid buildings, next to the S-Bahn tracks. (Yes, you will hear the trains passing by so give this a miss if that bothers you.)

8. Sommerkino am Potsdamer Platz
→ the outdoor Yorck Kino experience topped off with a view of the skyline
Yorck Kino group is the best cinema company in the city. So it’s not surprise that they have an outdoor kino of their very own. This one is large (1000 seats) and is tucked away the Kulturforum, which also offers the pretty backdrop of the Potsamer Platz skyline. The curation is what you’d expect from Yorck group: a great mix of classics, contemporary films and arthouse cinema. As an added bonus, there’s also reclining seating making the Sommerkino probably the most comfortable choice on this list.

9. Rosengarten Kulturpavillon
→ Small but powerful cultural center
Tucked away in the rose garden of Volkspark am Weinburg lies a small cinema and cultural center. However, they host more than just films here (a look at their current schedule shows hoop classes and fashion markets) so be sure to check the schedule first. But most nights they do show films, ranging from political to arthouse. Grab yourself a drink and a snack at the bar, and get cozy!

10. Freilichtbühne Weißensee
→ extensive film program in a legendary venue
The Freilichbühne Weissensee was built in 1952 and became a legendary concert venue during the 70s and 80s. In 2014, it was taken over and expanded, and is now run by a collective with an established program. On Wednesdays, they show off-beat films, arthouse films or documentaries and Thursdays show DEFA films. The weekends offer a mix of classics, current mainstream films, and arthouse picks and the daytime offerings are aimed at children. There are also readings and small theatre performances, so check the schedule before you go.

Enjoy The Show! A Few Tips Before You Go
Seasons typically run from May through to mid-September, with screenings starting at dusk. That’s typically around 9–10pm in high summer. Always bring a layer or a blanket. Berlin evenings can turn surprisingly chilly. Most cinemas allow you to bring snacks and drinks, and many are dog-friendly. Booking online in advance is strongly recommended, especially on warm weekends. And of course, enjoy the show!
