Where To Shop On Sundays in Berlin
Last Updated on May 8, 2025
One of the most surprising things about Germany is that it still sticks to the rule of no shopping on Sundays.
This took some getting used to when I first arrived here for sure! I’m used to having late night grocery stores and being able to run out to the shop to pick something up, even on holidays like Christmas.
That’s not how things are done here and I know it catches a lot of people unaware. So it’s a popular question: where can I shop on Sundays in Berlin?
Fortunately, not all hope is lost! You can get everything you need in Berlin, even on a Sunday or bank holiday. My big tip is to head to a big train station. They usually have several stores open to serve. (The idea is that people need stuff while they’re travelling. The rest of us don’t but travellers do!)
So don’t fret. Here’s our mega-list of shops that are open on Sundays and holidays in Berlin, Germany:

Spätis
Berliners love their spätis (late-night shops) and many spätis are open on Sundays. However, legally they’re not supposed to be. I have gone to spätis many times on Sundays but every once in a while I’ll be surprised by a closed one.
Since everything else is closed, Sundays are the späti’s most profitable day. So they get creative. Some get around this rule by operating as a cafe or flower shop. I’ve also seen spätis operating with their front shutters closed—arguably not fully opening while actually being opened.

Sunday Shopping Days
Before Christmas and on other select Sundays, shops are permitted to open for Verkaufsoffene Sonntage (Shopping Sundays). There are up to 8 of these shopping days per year, and usually it means that some malls, supermarkets and bigger stores like Ikea will open. The hours are generally 13-20:00 and the days are announced on the Berlin website.
