Top 10 Best Mexican Restaurants In Berlin
Craving tacos? Looking for the best Mexican food in Berlin?
First off: we’re in still in Germany, okay? So Mexican food (or Tex-Mex) will never quite reach true Mexico standards. I used to feel rather taco-deprived when I first moved here. However, I am happy to report there’s been a huge improvement in this culinary department over the last decade.
Whether you’re a local looking for new flavors, an expat (like me) or just in the mood for tacos, this list will have you covered.
BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANTS IN BERLIN
1. Taqueria El Oso
If you want the best tacos in Berlin, there’s no one better than Taqueria El Oso. Tucked away in the back of Markthalle Pfefferberg, the secret is definitely out on this one. Meaning: expect queues during the weekend. It’s not fancy and they don’t serve alcohol themselves. But the bar next to them offers up a wonderful spicy margarita. Tip: Go in the afternoon to avoid the lines or on a Sunday when they offer birria.

2. Oh La Queca
Oh La Queca stands out in Berlin because it does one thing really well: chilaquiles. They have tacos, of course, alongside flautas and sopa azteca. If you’re in brunch mode, opt for the huevos rancheros. Fire all that up with a spicy michelada and you’ve got one happy meal on your hands. But no matter what time of day you visit, don’t snooze on dessert! Their churros is bomb.

3. Taco Love
If you’re after lots of vegetarian options, this tiny stand under the U-bahn in Prenzlauer Berg is worth a stop! This one has loads of veggie and vegan options including vegan birria and breakfast tacos. Four tacos for 12 is a steal (down to 3 on Taco Tuesdays!) If this all sounds intriguing, you might also want to check out their sister location, Coco Liebe in Neukölln.

4. Pancho Villa Taqueria
I went here recently and was very impressed by the tacos! I got the cactus (veggie) and it was amazing. However, I was not so impressed by the margaritas (pre-mixed and overly sweet). So don’t go there expecting those. However, they have Corona (amongst other things of course) so you can still have a great time with your tacos, tamales and other assorted goodies.

5. Ta’Cabron
My personal favorite is Ta’Cabron. This was the first place I found decent Mexican food in Berlin (10 years ago it was a lot harder to find!). The staff is friendly and usually Mexican, which is always a good sign. The margaritas are great, prices are low. The place is small, and typically, you need a reservation on the weekends but walk-ins are possible. Tip: My only gripe is that they never give me enough hot sauce. I need a whole one just for me! Forgive me, but I just cannot split one with the table. (They will do this on request!) Also, I love their horchata.

6. Tortilleria Mexa
If you’re after tacos in Friedrichshain, walk your hungry butt on over to Tortilleria Mexa. As you might have guessed from the name, this place is famous for tortillas; they make them themselves and you can also grab a bag to take home. (There are other Mexican food supplies as well in the deli.) If tacos aren’t your thing, they also have quesadillas, tortas and, of course, Mezcal.

7. Sabor a Mi
Sabor A Mi (tastes like me) is the little sister to Taqueria El Oso is also worth a stop. Tacos, tostadas, sopes and more are all served from this bricks-and-mortar location (and sometimes food truck). Specials include pozole and chicken in mole. Tip: Don’t miss their hibiscus lemonade!

8. El Amigo Tacos
If birria is what you’re after, then this is the choice for you! (But don’t sweat it if your veg. They also have a mushroom option.) El Amigo is only open a few days a week (so check the hours before you show up). It’s a former food truck with a new permanent location. While you used to have to stake them out at the Sony Center, you can now find them in Mitte, which is much more convenient in my books.

9. Maria Bonita
Maria Bonita is another OG in Berlin. It’s also sister to Santa Maria in Kreuzberg (but I prefer this location).

10. Burro Unchained
Looking for more than an imbiss? Burro Unchained offers a more elevated and experimental approach to Mexican cuisine. Think: pastrami tostadas or roast cauliflower with mole sauce, creations all dreamt up by the German-Iranian owner. Considering their more casual joint in the hood, Club der Burro, offers kimchi with their tacos, this comes as no surprise. Note: this is not for you if you’re a stickler for authenticity.
Address: Allerstraße 11, 12049 Berlin (Neukölln)
Hours: Tues-Sat 16-22
Honorable Mentions
If you’re after a Chipotle-style burrito or bowl, I recommend Dolores or Mishba (multiple locations). Not to be overlooked, the relatively new viral sensation Munchies offers birria tacos, but I definitely wouldn’t call it a Mexican-style restaurant.
