Last Updated on January 16, 2026
Berlin transforms into a magical destination during the cold winter months, offering a unique blend of cozy indoor experiences and festive outdoor activities. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or rediscovering the city, here are 16 wonderful things to do in Berlin when the temperature drops.
Is Berlin Worth Visiting in Winter?
While the summer months are definitely the most popular time of year to visit Berlin, you shouldn’t snooze on the rest of the year. Both spring and fall can be great, but visiting during the winter months offers some experiences that you simply can’t get during the rest of the calendar year.

Berlin Weather In Winter
Let me be honest with you: Berlin doesn’t exactly sparkle during the winter months. The city takes on a distinctly gray palette, with genuinely sunny days appearing only once or twice every couple of weeks. And if you’re visiting in December, brace yourself for early sunsets. (We’re talking 4:00PM 😑).
My advice? Embrace the early bird lifestyle. Wake up with the dawn to make the most of those precious daylight hours and start your adventures on the right foot.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
December
Expect temperatures to hover around 4°C/39°F during the day, dipping to -1°C/31°F at night. It’s also not common to see snow at this time. Instead, you’ll be more likely to encounter rain, so be sure to pack good shoes and an umbrella.
January
Expect slightly cooler temperatures, with highs around 3°C/37°F and lows of 29°F/-2°C). The city is generally falls into a post-holiday lull during this time, which means some attractions will be pleasantly empty. There’s also a higher chance of snow in January, though it’s by no means guaranteed. (Berlin doesn’t get that much snow in general.)
February
February is typically Berlin’s coldest month, with average temperatures with highs of 5°C/40°F to lows of -2°C/29°F. However, you might encounter a cold streak, which drops the temperature to about -12°C/10°F and might last about two weeks. Bring proper weather attire just in case!
When Should You Visit?
In my opinion, December takes the cake (or kuchen/) as the best time to experience winter in Berlin. The holiday activities, twinkling lights, and festive atmosphere transform the city’s gray weather and mood into something genuinely magical. However, don’t write off the other winter months. Berlin has plenty to offer beyond Christmas markets.
16 Things to Do in Berlin in Winter

1. Visit The Berlin Christmas Markets
Berlin hosts more than 100 Christmas markets spread across the city. So if you’re visiting in December, you’re bound to stumble upon a few without even trying. Still, some of the very best markets operate only during specific dates, so be sure to check out our Berlin Christmas Market Guide right here!
Christmas markets are a beloved European tradition, and Germany does them extremely well. As the holidays draw close, charming little market stalls pop up all over the city where you can sip the local version of mulled wine, sample classic holiday treats, and pick up handmade gifts or souvenirs for friends and family. The booths typically evoke a charming, old-world style, and it all feels a bit magical.
Most Christmas markets are free to enter, but some charge a small fee. It will cost about €4 for a glühwein and a bit more for food or gifts. But not to worry. If you’re on a budget. You can absolutely enjoy the markets for free. So grab your friends, put on some warm clothes, and get merry!

2. Go Ice Skating
One of the best pleasures of the winter months is outdoor ice skating. If you’re here during the Christmas season, then you’ll have several options to choose from. Try out the circular rink around the Neptune Fountain at the Roten Rathaus Christmas market, Potsdamer Platz, Dark Matter’s Winterlights, Zenner, and or go a little further afield to the Potsdam Christmas market. Typically, skate rental is about €5 so it’s an affordable adventure. Also, my Canadian background wants to warn you that they are all engineered ice, not the real thing.

3. Visit a Museum in Berlin
The cooler winter months are the perfect time to explore Berlin’s world-class museums. During the summer, the museums (of Museum Island in particular) can get quite crowded, so winter offers a calmer experience. Museum Island hosts five museums. But there are lots more to choose from in Berlin, with topics on WWII history, antiquities, art, and much more.

4. Experience the Berlin Philharmonic
The concert season is in full swing during winter, and the Berlin Philharmonic is one of the world’s finest orchestras. Even if you’re not a classical music enthusiast, the acoustics and architecture of the Philharmonie building make for an unforgettable cultural experience.
Tip: If you’re on a budget, the Philharmonic offers free lunchtime concerts in its lobby every Wednesday. Check their schedule for updates!

5. Go On A Walking Tour
Walking tours are always popular in Berlin, and again, visiting during the colder months usually translates into smaller groups and more one-on-one attention. Typically, the weather is above freezing, so it’s actually not that bad for a few hours of walking. Just be sure to dress appropriately when the day comes!

6. Warm Up in Traditional Berlin Cafés
Embrace the German concept of Gemütlichkeit (coziness) in one of Berlin’s many charming cafés. An afternoon coffee and kuchen (cake) is a German tradition, and there are plenty of options to tempt you. Try Café Einstein for some old-fashioned Viennese coffeehouse culture, the Five Elephant for some amazing cheesecake, or head to Kreuzberg’s Barcomi’s for delicious baked goods like cake or pie. It’s the perfect way to escape the cold while watching Berlin life unfold outside.

7. Go Sledding at Potsdamer Platz
The toboggan run at Potsdamer Platz Winterwelt is always a winter highlight, for both young and old. The toboggan run is 12 metres high and offers a slightly elevated view of Potsdamer Platz (if only for a moment).
After your downhill adventure, you can grab food in the food stalls or head over to the skating rink for some more outdoor fun. The nearby Kerb Food Hall is another great choice for your urban après ski.

The Bavarian-style beer halls also serve food, but you might want to try Berlin’s oldest restaurant, Zur Letzten Instanz (it dates back to 1621!) or a more modern choice like Trio in Mitte or the vegan Das Försters in Prenzlauer Berg.

This spectacular venue hosts world-class revue shows with dazzling costumes, impressive choreography, and state-of-the-art stage technology. (Jean Paul Gaultier frequently designs the costumes!)
